Update

I have applied to 5 universities, using all my choice slots. The universities that I applied to are, Nottingham Trent, University for the Creative Arts, Ravensbourne, London Metropolitan University and De Montfort University.

Currently, I have received 4 out of my 5 offers. I was given a target of a Merit by Nottingham Trent, but told my offer would be unconditional if I made them my first choice. I was also given a target grade of Merit by London Metropolitan and UCA. I have also been given a conditional offer of a Pass by Ravensbourne. I am still waiting to hear from De Montfort Uni for an offer.

In October of 2020, I will be working to gain a bit of money before I go to university in 2021. I will have a place at Nottingham Trent which I will go going to in September of 2021.

Video Essay - Steven Spielberg

Steven Spielberg is a director, internationally known for films primarily within the adventure and action genres.

In 1975, Spielberg directed Jaws. This film made 'Steven Spielberg' a household name after the $7million budgeted film brought in $470.7million at the box office.

Alongside Jaws, Jurassic Park is one of Spielberg's most known films and due to them both being directed by Spielberg, we can see certain thematic, narrative and stylistic links.

One thematic link between the two films would be how the focus of the film is on attacks from dangerous, prehistoric animals. (Sharks and dinosaurs respectively).

Both films also have some of the most recognisable scores in the world of film. Both scores were composed by world renowned composer, John Williams.

In both Jurassic Park and Jaws, the characters experience trouble with the animals. This causes the park and beach respectively to be closed.

Montage Media

The Kuleshov Effect:

The Kuleshov Effect is a technique used in editing to link two or more clips that may or may not already be linked to each other. This then allows viewers to interpret more from the sequence of shots than is shown through the script.

Soviet Montage:

Soviet Montage is a type of film that relies heavily on editing. This style of filmmaking and editing was used a lot in the Soviet Union around the 20s and 30s. It was widely used in government propaganda to instill a certain message into the minds of the people.

Painting 8mm Film

This theory was a very basic one, in the sense that all it involved was paint and film. All we had to do was add detail to 8mm film and it was played back to us after it dried. Everyone in the class was given approximately 1m or film which equates to about 3 seconds when developed. This means that 18 frames make up one second of playback. The film was then played to us on the tele-cine machine.

This was a very fun activity that I wouldn’t mind doing this again. It’s a very therapeutic activity and allows for people’s full creativity to flow.

Final Theory - Proposal

Theory into Practice Final Product Proposal

Reflection on theory (reference all)

The narrative theory is something that interested me since I did it at GCSE so I already knew some of the theories, but I didn’t like the process of writing Freytag’s theory since it took a very long time to complete and I struggled writing it.
Authorship was confusing for me and I didn’t really understand it.
I really enjoyed the montage theory since it forced us to use the footage we could find rather than our own footage. I found this really interesting and found all of the initial theory work interesting too, apart from watching Man with a Movie Camera, which wasn’t as interesting as initially anticipated.
Surrealism was a good theory since it made us all think outside the box.
The Brecht theory was the most confusing of them all.

How this has led to a final idea (discuss theory for project)

For my final idea, I am going to be using montage theory. I’m going to be using this since theory because I feel like it was the easiest to understand and would allow me to express my ideas to the fullest.

Proposal for form of final product

For my final theory into practice product, I want to give the viewer different emotions on either end of the spectrum. For example, happiness and sadness, two emotions that are only associated with each other due to being polar opposites.

I want to use something that people find cute and put a twist into the montage to make them feel sad or upset or something along those lines.

My idea is to make a montage of cute puppies with happy, calm and peaceful music in the background, but add in videos of dogs being put down with people crying to make them feel upset. My objective is to make the viewer now know how to feel, happy or sad.
